Democrats on National Coming Out Day: Trump ‘openly hostile’ to LGBTQ

This year’s celebration of National Coming Out Day is shrouded by the Trump presidency, top Democrats said Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, this year’s celebration is clouded by a presidency that is openly hostile to LGBTQ people,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez and DNC LGBT Caucus Chairman Earl Fowkles said in a statement.

The Trump administration has retracted the Department of Education’s guidance on transgender students, abandoned America’s global leadership role on LGBTQ rights and proposed cuts to HIV/AIDS testing and care, Democrats said.

They also criticized the administration’s reinterpretation of law to give businesses “a license to discriminate,” referencing memos from Attorney General Jeff Sessions that give religious groups and individuals broad protections to express their beliefs when they come into conflict with government. Experts say the guidance could lead to discrimination of LGBTQ people.

Those memos were released a day after the Department of Justice released a memorandum excluding transgender identifying individuals from civil rights protections.

“Democrats are committed to fighting this administration’s anti-LGBTQ actions tooth and nail. We will redouble our efforts to protect the progress we’ve made. And we wish all Americans a happy Coming Out Day,” the Democrats said.
