The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors opened their second round campaign with a 90-77 upset over the National University (NU) Bulldogs in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) on Saturday at the Big Dome.
Mark Olayon led UE with 16 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, while Wilson Bartolome added 14 markers.
A strong opening frame saw the Red Warriors grab a 21-15 advantage going into the second frame.
UE managed to extend their advantage to 31-22, but the Bulldogs managed to trim it down to 35-33 midway through the second quarter.
But it was the Red Warriors that entered the halftime interval in the ascendancy, using a late burst to lead 45-36.
The Bulldogs managed to get to the free throw line with regularity, using their efficiency from the charity stripe to whittle down the UE advantage to just 62-59 going into the payoff period.
It was the Red Warriors’ reserves that stepped up in the final quarter, stretching their lead to 88-74 through an Olayon lay in and-one.
NU ran out of answers in the dying minutes, as UE secured an unexpected victory.
Issa Gaye paced NU with with a game-high 20 points, while Jayjay Alejandro tacked on 16 of his own for the Bulldogs.
UE’s record now stands at 2-6, while the Bulldogs slid down to a 3-5 slate.
