The two guard position in the modern NBA is filled with exceptional scorers who can fill the box score up with ease. Whether it’s skywalkers like Demar Derozan or three point maestros like Klay Thompson. These guys are terrific at what they do and are complete hell for the guys who are assigned to defend them. So without further ado, here’s the list of the top shooting guards the association has to offer.
10. Dwyane Wade
2016-2017 Stats: 18.3 PPG 4.5 REB 3.8 AST
Do you hear that? It’s the tears of D-Wade fanboys after they see he’s “only” number ten on my list which may even be generous honestly. The Flash is still a very solid player, he averaged 18 a game last season with limited minutes but as he continues to get older his game continues to diminish which is obviously understandable. At Wade’s advanced age, he’s still a decent scorer who can play defense against some of the less than skilled two guards and is still a valuable locker room presence. It’ll be interesting to see how his reunion with Lebron will go this season as he’ll be forced to play a bigger role on a much bigger stage than he had in Chicago.
9. Nicolas Batum
2016-2017 Stats: 15.1 PPG 6.2 REB 5.9 AST
The most honest comparison I can give Batum is he’s a poor mans Lebron. Batum can play four different positions if need be and can defend four different positions with his length and quick athleticism. He’s a bit of a stat sheet stuffer as a quality scorer who can attack the basket and stretch the floor with his decent three point shooting. He’s a pretty good rebounder and a damn good passer who can see the floor in its entirety creating havoc for those who are assigned to guard him.
8. Avery Bradley
2016-2017 Stats: 16.3 PPG 6.1 REB 46.3 FFG%
The growth of Avery Bradley has really been a fun one to watch. People forget he was the guy that Boston chose to replace Ray Allen with after they let him leave to Miami, and he stepped up big time. For a few years until they acquired Isaiah Thomas, Avery was their best player consistently guarding the other teams best player and by guard, I mean locking down the opposing teams best offensive player. It’s honestly fair to call him the best defensive two guard in the league and as he continues to get better on the offensive side of the ball, he’ll only move up on list such as this one.
7. CJ Mccollum
2016-2017 Stats: 23.0 PPG 48.0 FFG% 42.1 3FG%
CJ Mcollum has really grown into one of the best scorers/shooters the NBA has to offer. The former most improved player has gotten better every year he’s been in the league and he, along with Damian Lillard, has created one of the best and most dynamic backcourts in the NBA. An excellent shooter with incredible range, his game compliments so well with Dame’s and they’ve done a great job of carrying that less than stellar roster thus far in their young careers. Now management just has to do their job and pair them with a solid player whose game adds something different from what they already bring. COUGH COUGH Paul Geo…
6. Devin Booker
22.1 PPG 42.3 FFG% 36.3 3FG%
Devin Booker has the potential to be a top shooting guard in this league but there’s a couple of things he has to address first in his game. First being his defense. Often times he is a lazy defender has plays off ball and puts his teammates in holes as they have to pick up his assignments and secondly he has to be more efficient in his shooting numbers. 42.3 shooting from the field isn’t good enough for a player with his shooting ability but nonetheless he can light the score board up and get this, he’s only entering his third NBA season. Devin has plenty of time to grow and I expect for him to average 25 points a game on 45% shooting this year.
5. Bradley Beal
2016-2017 Stats: 23.1 PPG 48.2 FFG% 3.5 AST
Beal has grown to become one of the deadliest shooters the NBA has to offer with his almost impossible to block quick release jump shot and a midrange game to die for. He’s also grown to become one of the better defensive shooting guards in the league and he alongside John Wall have created one of the most dynamic duos the NBA has to offer.
4. Jimmy Butler
2016-2017 Stats: 23.9 PPG 6.2 REB 5.5 AST
Jimmy Buckets growth into a really solid offensive player has been surprising to say the least. I don’t think anyone saw him growing into the defensive stud he’s become and I certainly don’t believe anyone saw him turning into the solid offensive option that he has been in his career either. Jimmy Butler’s career has been surrounded by so much drama in young career dealing with the diva that is Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, and the mess of an organization that is the Bulls, a change of scenery will do him some good and it’ll be fun to watch how this young core meshes together.
3. Demar Derozan
2016-2017 NBA stats: 27.3 PPG 46.7 FFG% 5.2 REB
Demar Derozan has become one of my favorite players in the NBA to watch. A dazzling high flyer who can attack the basket at will and a excellent midrange shooter. Demar has become one of the elite players in the NBA today. He, alongside Kyle Lowry, has created a excellent backcourt together but it will take Toronto’s front office to add another to piece if they have any chance of dethroning the King in the eastern conference.
2. Klay Thompson
2016-2017 Stats: 22.3 PPG 46.8 FFG% 3.7 REB
Klay thompson is hands down the best two way shooting guard in the NBA, no debate. He constantly has to take on the assignment of guarding the other teams best point guard because of Steph’s inability to play on ball defense and he does this night in and night out so effortlessly. I know we’ve claimed Steph has the best shooter in the NBA and quite possibly the greatest shooter of all time but there’s many nights where I question that, and I only question that because of the Jon B look alike who wears number eleven for the Golden State Warriors.
1. James Harden
2016-2017 Stats: 29.1 PPG 8.1 REB 11.2 AST
I really don’t believe there’s much surprise with this one here honestly. James Harden has been the best shooting guard in the NBA since he departed from OKC almost five years ago now. An excellent shooter he can completely fill the stat sheet, Harden can score in multiple ways. He can pull from deep, he can attack the glass, he draws fouls with ease, and he’s a excellent passer and it’s fair to say he probably has some of the best court vision in the league today. Now with the presence of CP3 on the team it’ll make his job to score a whole lot easier.
